More Brits Head to the Slopes For 2008 Winter Skiing

December 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The 2006/2007 ski season saw a nice rise in numbers of Brits taking a ski holiday. Last year’s 3% rise is expected to increase through the 2007/2008 ski season.

Just over 37% of UK skiers choose to ski in France while 19% choose Austria and 13% choose to ski in Italy. France seems to be the favorite ski destination for most Britons. Crystal Holidays already reports a 10% increase in bookings in its resorts.

The 2006/2007 ski season was more challenging than previous years due to poor snowfall at the start of the season. Lower-altitude ski resorts could face the same challenges this year, according to predictions, but early snowfalls in Austria and Andorra have been encouraging.

Inghams, another popular UK ski holiday company, also reports bookings ahead of last year at this time.

Litsa Constantinou, Chief Executive of Inghams, said: “We expect growth in many of the popular destinations and also that the trend for people taking multiple ski holidays will continue.”

High-altitude, snow-sure resorts with Neilson Ski are also selling very well this 2007/2008 ski season. Andy Harmer, head of product and planning at Neilson, said: “Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish resorts are proving attractive, as are the Canadian resorts, which enjoyed fantastic snow last winter.”

Crystal Holidays is the UK’s leading holiday spot for year round travel, especially during ski season. Crystal features a network of 140 resorts in 14 countries worldwide. Gareth Crump, product and marketing director for Crystal Holidays, said: “France benefits from the popularity of the chalet and club hotel product and its high-altitude resorts. Austria lost out (last ski season) because its low-lying resorts suffered from poor snowfall.”

Aside from great ski destinations, Crystal Holidays offers great family holiday getaways. Crystal has stylish hotels and chalets in some of the UK’s most popular resort locations. Many of these locations offer a wide range of holiday escapes in Europe and North America; some of Crystal’s holiday packages include; lakeside locations, mountain villages, beach resorts, walking breaks, city stays, touring and much more. You can truly enjoy your holiday at your own pace with activities like hiking, biking, climbing, rafting and paragliding.

The Principality of Andorra, more commonly known as Andorra, is a highly sought-after ski destination. Nestled in the eastern Pyrenees mountains bordering Spain and France, Andorra usually provides perfect ski conditions throughout the ski season. Crystal Holidays has three resorts in Andorra; Arinsal, Pas de la Casa, and Soldeu.

Andorra’s economy relies primarily on the estimated nine-million tourists who visit each year. Due to the tourist population and immigration, there are many languages spoken in Andorra. The historic and official language of the area is Catalan. Many nationalities have immigrated to Andorra, so you’ll also hear Spanish, French and Portuguese, as well as English.

Andorra is rich in culture and home to folk dances like the contrapas and marratxa. Andorran folk music shares similarities with all of its neighbouring provinces and countries but is essentially Catalan in character.

Skiing has become a very popular seasonal getaway during the last decade; more and more people each year book ski holidays as weekend getaways and week-long holidays. Where ever you plan your 2007/2008 ski holiday, keep these great destinations in mind.

2008 Ski Holidays Price Rocket

December 19, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

A new report shows that a skiing holiday has reached it’s highest ever price, and it’s come at a time when the ski industry is trying to turnaround a drop in bookings last year.

The surprise report shows that the price of a typical ski holiday has risen everywhere in both Europe and Noth America – except for Germany and the United States – with Canadian ski holidays rising in price as a direct result of the strong Canadian dollar against the Euro and British sterling.

Pushing prices up for the 2008 skiing season are not just higher aviation fuel costs and government levied flight taxes, but lift passes, equipment hire and ski instructor lessons have all risen faster than inflation.

Comparing different ski resorts striking differences emerge with ski lift passes costing 90 sterling in Bulgaria and Romania – but over 240 sterling in Banff, Canada – nearly treble the cost.

And private ski lessons also showed great price differentials. Some ski resorts in Romania are offering lessons for 11 sterling, in Switzerland 35 nut in Banff it gord up to 65, nearly six times the cost of their Romanian counterparts.

Once the skiing is over for the day the price differences are still as sharp. While a cup of coffee in Italy is around one Euro, in Norway it is nearer to three, and for those who prefer alcohol a beer in Bulgaria is a pound, but astonishingly over five pounds in Norway – and the cost of a meal shows similar price differentials.

Commenting upon the report, an Andorra travel guide who include ski holidays information comments that ‘The difference in prices between different resorts is surprising. We would expect some regional and local variance but not to the extent we are seeing for the 2008 ski season in Europe and North America.’

The lower priced ski countries could see an upswing in visitors in 2008 – much needed after a poor 2007 season in countries like Austria and Andorra. Both countries are investing in their ski infrastructure and benefitting too from low cost airlines offering more flights to skiiers.

Several airlines recently announced a plan to encourage more trips to ski resorts by opening up additional routes for travel to European ski resorts. These fly passengers directly to the airports that are closest to several of the major skiing destinations for many individuals and families on holiday. For example, the UK’s biggest low cost airline flies passengers on holiday into Barcelona, which is the nearest airport to the Andorra skiing resorts.

In addition to the flights taking passengers to ski at Andorra, there are several more flights connecting skiiers to their favourite ski destinations. Flights from London, Glasgow, Bristol, Liverpool, Blackpool and Newscastle all connect UK skiiers individuals to their favourite ski resorts.

The reason airlines have chosen to increase the number of direct routes they provide to ski resorts for the 2007 winter holiday period is due to the fact business is booming. As of the end of October, one airline had over 2.5 million bookings for individuals and families wanting their flying services to travel to skiing destinations in Europe during the winter of 2008.

Branson, Missouri Best of 2008

December 18, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

The year 2008 was an exciting one for the city of Branson, MO, and 2009 is shaping up to be even better. Branson saw many changes for the better in 2008 with the opening of several unique attractions that are sure to bring in more visitors. Many of the annual events received a facelift and were bigger and better than ever before. Read on to get an overview of what happened in 2008 for this beautiful Ozark city, and what lays ahead in the rest of 2009.

New and Updated Shows in 2008

There were new shows added to Branson’s star studded lineup, as well as some updated productions that added new entertainment for visitors last year. In addition to changes in local shows, there were also some new theaters introduced within the city as well.

In the middle of the year, the Sight and Sound Theater opened its Christian Broadway style production of Noah the Musical. Complete with a forty foot ark replica and hundreds of cast members, it is one of the biggest show productions in Branson. Its opening was a success, and it closed out the year as one of Branson’s most popular shows. The new Oak Ridge Boys Theatre was opened in 2008 as well on the Shepherd of the Hills Expressway, with their grand opening registering a success as well.

The Andy Williams Moon River Theatre added a new morning show called “The Entertainers,” and Dick Clark’s American Bandstand Theatre added a new morning show featuring the Gatlin brothers. Area ’57 was opened up by Dick Clark’s American Bandstand complex, and played host to BransonFest 2008 as well as many other events throughout the year.

New and Updated Branson Attractions

Silver Dollar City, Branson’s leading theme park attraction started 2008 with a bang, vowing to have the most festival packed year yet. They succeeded in that goal with a year full of festivals and fun for all ages. Spring began with an Irish celebration, followed by the Bluegrass and BBQ Festival, the Kids Fest, Southern Gospel Picnic, National Harvest Festival, and a host of ultimate Christmas celebrations.

The Silver Dollar City Christmas celebration was the best ever as well, with a five story Christmas tree full of special effects, a huge sound and lights show, the addition of the new Frosty show for children, and a light display that was named as one of the best from USA Today and Good Morning America.

Celebration City, Branson’s biggest nighttime attraction, conducted one of the largest park expansions. The addition of Roaring Falls, a $2 million water ride has a five story 55 degree drop that is sure to thrill.

What is Ahead for 2009?

Barely a few months in, 2009 has already proven to be filled with success for the city of Branson. Ground was broken on the new airport, which will allow thousands of tourists and business associates direct access to this booming city. The Air Force Thunderbirds are scheduled to come to Branson this year, as well as a wide range of other shows and performances.

The American Theater has been undergoing a million dollar renovation and is set to re-open in early March. Among other things, the theater will now sport a new state of the art sound and lights system.

Many good things happened for the growing city of Branson in 2008, and many more exciting changes lay ahead for the rest of 2009. Branson continues to prove itself as a leading vacation destination year after year with its addition of new attractions, shows, and activities for people of any age.
