Cheap Hotels in Beautiful Toronto, Canada

December 30, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Using the Internet is the Best Place to Start

The Internet supplies the largest collection of information on cheap Toronto hotels in the world. While many people start at travel websites, often reserving hotel rooms directly from the main website of the business can mean saving money. Hotels in Toronto will often publish lower fares on their main websites before offering those fares on travel websites.

Comparison Shopping the Best Deals

Another huge benefit of searching for cheap Toronto hotels on the Internet is the ability to comparison shop the rates. If one travel website is listing a four star hotel for $100 US a night, search for the same accommodations on several other websites and the hotel site. The lowest rate you thought you were getting could be higher than competitor rates.

Willing to Travel?

If a car rental will be used while traveling in Toronto, a huge savings could be had by reserving cheap Toronto hotels outside of city limits. The cities of Markham, Vaughan, Mississauga, Newmarket and Pickering are just minutes outside of the city proper but offer lower hotel rates than those located in the middle of the action. An example are the Motels/Hotels in Mississauga Ontario. You can find very good rooms in Mississauga starting at $45 a night. Another benefit is that Mississauga is only twenty minutes from Downtown Toronto.

Reserving Toronto hotels outside of the downtown core may also offer interesting sights and attractions to visit. Vaughan, for instance, is home to the largest Theme park in all of Canada ( Canada’s Wonderland ). The ride to the city center is just 45 minutes, but the money saved will be well worth the time.

Choosing the Best Time of Year for Travel

There are two times of the year when Toronto is truly hopping with visitors, summer and winter. During the summer months, the temperatures make for the perfect outdoor hiking and camping adventures. Contrary to some peoples belief, temperatures in Toronto can soar up over thirty degrees celsius. The winter months are great for skiing and outdoor winter sports. When making travel plans, cheap Toronto hotels will be easier to find if traveling during the spring and fall as these are the less popular months for tourist travel to the city. Traveling on the weekdays as opposed to the weekends will also lower the rates for cheap Toronto hotels.

On a final note, if you do decide to visit Toronto, do not forget to check out our CN Tower for a beautiful view of the entire city! Other big attractions are: Royal Ontario Museum (ROM), Toronto Zoo, The Distillery Historic District and the Ontario Science Centre.

Go Ahead and Spoil Yourself – Rent a Chateau In The Beautiful Loire Valley In France

December 27, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

What child reading about fairytale castles in Europe doesn’t dream of being a handsome prince or beautiful princess, living a life of romantic luxury, and being waited on hand and foot. Now you are an adult, you can realise this childhood fantasy by renting a luxury Loire Valley chateau for your next holiday. Here you can totally unwind and relaz and feel like royalty.

The Loire Valley is one of France’s best kept secrets, located some 200km south of Paris. The Loire River is over 1000 kilometres long and it is the longest last wild river of Europe.

The Val de Loire is actually France’s third most popular tourist destination after Paris and the French Riviera. But the Loire Valley is so vast, that families return year after year and never tire of its many attractions. It has something to offer every tourist.

Firstly it is famous for its renaissance chateaux: town chateaux like Chateau Blois and Chateau Amboise, Chateau Chambord the largest hunting lodge in the world, Chateau Chenonceau spanning across the River Cher mirroring her beauty, Chateau Usse the original inspiration for Sleeping Beauty, Chateau Cheverney with the best collection of furniture in the Loire Valley and Herge’s inspiration for mythical Moulinsart from the Tintin cartoon

Francois I was not content with just Chateau Blois and Chateau Amboise as his residences, he commissioned Chateau du Chambord the largest chateau in the Loire Valley as a mere hunting lodge. It took 20 years to build and then he spent only seven weeks there hunting.

Then there are also Chateau Villandry with its famous gardens and Chateau Chaumont with its incredible summer long international contemporary garden festival. If you need inspiration for a vegetable garden you must visit Chateau Villandry.

Gardening in the Loire Valley takes on a mystical quality, and even Mick Jagger, gyrating thick lipped lead singer of the Rolling Stones who has his preferred second residence, a 16th chateau he purchased 26 years ago called La Fourchette at Pose-sur-Cisse near Amboise, is a keen gardener. Artistic historian John Richardson says of Mick Jagger and his new walled garden “he became completely part of the garden, knew every single thing about all the plants, the flowers, the way the fruit trees were espaliered”.

Fans of Da Vinci can visit Chateau Clos Luce and admire his salons, study, kitchen and the chapel and see frescoes painted by his pupils. His drawings and paintings are set out in the park of the castle with giant models of the most incredible machines he invented with voice-overs of Leonardo da Vinci and his disciple Melzi.

The Loire Valley is also a popular destination for followers of the Holy Grail and the Knights Templar because of its close association with Leonardo Da Vinci and because it is so seeped in history.

There is so much more to the Loire Valley than topiaries, towers, turrets and tapestries. The Touraine region also has the reputation for being the region where the best French is spoken in the world.

The combination of vineyards and chateaux make the Touraine region of the Loire Valley an incredible destination for any wine lover and his or her family. The Loire Valley really is the most beautiful wine region in the world.

The Loire is France’s last great unrecognized wine region. The Loire Valley wine area is located south west of Paris typically a little over 2 hours drive from the Paris peripherique and extending out as far as Nantes. It is an area blessed with a gentle climate and rich soil, allowing for the production of diverse appellations with vast degrees of character.

Some of France’s best winemaking happens in the Loire though few Americans are aware of it. Even many French are unaware of some of the gems now being produced in the Loire Valley. No other wine region in France welcomes visitors with such warmth or simplicity. Sommeliers, wine-bar and wine-shop owners, the wine press from Brussels, London, Paris and Tokyo in the know spend their vacations holidaying the Loire Valley.

White wines of the Loire Valley typically improve with being aged from 5 to 15 years depending upon the AOC and the vintage. A new bottle of French Loire Valley white wine may be good, but a properly aged bottle is even better.

Then there is the food. French cuisine is famous and flourishing in the Loire Valley. Goat’s cheese is a speciality. Little village bistros whip up amazing dishes at incredibly cheap prices. The local produce is divine. And the glorious local food is best accompanied with a glass or two of Loire Valley wine.

This fine relaxed living is one of the reasons why Mick Jagger holidays at his chateau every summer. With his wealth and his connections he could holiday anywhere.

The Loire et Velo track is heaven for cyclists. The Loire Valley is especially well-appointed for two wheels because of the gentle gradients and intricate network of back roads that are refreshingly free of motorised traffic.

The Loire Valley offers everything the travelling golfer requires. If you are a golfer and you bring your clubs you will not be handsomely rewarded.

In France there are 280,000 registered golfers for 340 courses. This translates into lots of available tee times and no crowds on a course. Many golf courses are designed around magnificent chateaux. The finest course in the region, is Les Bordes near Chateau Chambord, consistently ranked in the top five of France’s best courses.

Don’t just visit a french castle – rent a castle in France and truly experience the grandeur of living in a castle in France. You will be absolutely amazed.

Corina Clemence operates a luxury french chateau in the Loire Valley near Blois, for up to fifteen people perfect for family holidays and for touring vineyards and chateaux and relaxing. It is ideal for a french wedding, party or event. Rent the whole castle or rent a suite. Rent a castle in France. A Very Beautiful City

December 27, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Casablanca is a very active and very beautiful city in western Morocco. There are many buildings and business that benefit from tourism. With many restaurants and ways of transportation, it is easily a great place to travel. There are about 3 million residents, and many of them are very friendly and helpful to the newcomers and visitors. This exotic city is a very lively paradise and the weather is warm throughout the year. The temperature does not often reach more than 75 degrees Fahrenheit, or 24 degrees Celsius, but it does not go much lower than fifty one degrees Fahrenheit and eleven degrees Celsius. Most people who visit the active city will prefer the warmer part of the year. The perfect temperatures keep even the laziest travelers ready for more adventure and social fun.

There are many ways to get to the city of Casablanca in Morocco. If you are from another country, you will probably be taking an airplane to get to the city. Mohammed V International Airport is probably the most commonly used air port in the city and this is how a majority of the tourists get to the city. The French and the Spanish are the most likely visitors, but the city of Casablanca can be enjoyed by anyone with the will to have fun.

One of the first things that will come to a person’s mind when he or she hears the name ‘Casablanca’ is of the movie of the same name. It is true that the 1942 romantic drama film was set in the city of Casablanca. In the movie, it accurately shows the city still under the control of France. It was in the March of 1956 in which Morocco became independent from France again. Though most of them are speakers of the native language of Arabic, more than half of the residents also speak French, as a result of the time that the country of Morocco was occupied by the French. Many people also speak Spanish, because Spain is not a great distance away from the country.

There are a great number of landmarks are a huge attraction for incoming tourists to the city of Casablanca. When Casablanca was under the control of the French, architects were able to create many magnificent structures in the city. One of the most visited is the Hassan II Mosque, which over a hundred thousand worshippers can pray in and look through the windows at the Atlantic ocean. It is the second largest mosque in the world. Some of the other popular sites are the Casablanca Twin Towers, the Technopark, both of which are very educational. There are also many local restaurants for those who wish to sample the cultural foods. Casablanca is a very beautiful city.

Choosing Your Vacation in Beautiful Phuket

December 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Phuket is the spectacularly beautiful tropical island off the southern coast of Thailand. Known as the Pearl of the South, it offers a diverse mixture of outstanding natural beauty, culture, sport, crazy nightlife or simple relaxation. It caters for everyone, of all ages, budgets, and needs, and is one of Asia’s most popular destinations.

The breathtaking scenery of Phuket simply demands to be explored, and its variety means you will never get bored. Whether you wish to visit the mountains, the tropical jungle, the stunning waterfalls or sea caves, a number of excursions, on foot, boat or on elephant, allow you to discover the untamed interior. Of course, Phuket is also famed for its sandy, palm-lined beaches and warm blue waters, and between enjoying the sunshine on the beach or the various water-sports on offer, such as scuba diving or water-skiing, you will be spoilt for choice.

As well as the magnificent scenery, Phuket also offers a wide variety of activities that will fill your days. For those interested in exploring Phuket’s culture there is plenty to see. A number of Buddhist temples dot the island, the most important and beautiful being Wat Chalong on the southern end of the island. Phuket also has an interesting history, having been located on the trading routes between India and China from the seventeenth century, and subject to competition between European powers for its tin. Old Phuket town still has its colonial architecture and is a must see for those interested in the rich history of Phuket. A visit to the villages of the Chao Leh, or sea-gypsies, along the coast is worth a visit too. Having earned their living in the nineteenth century through piracy or pearl diving, the Chao Leh are now predominantly fishermen, and they offer a glimpse of the other side of this tropical island. Other popular attractions include a trip to the Phuket Fantasea, a unique cultural theme park, or watching Muay Thai, or Thai Boxing. There are also a number of festivals throughout the year that are a mix of celebration and spiritualism for the islanders. And on those days you don’t feel like exploring Phuket’s rich heritage and culture, there is also great shopping to be had!

If, after packing your days with action, you still have the energy to continue, then Phuket also offers a fantastic nightlife- and again, caters for everyone. Patong is the most hedonistic and raucous destination, crammed with go-go bars, discos, restaurants and bars. It is the home of the Simon Cabaret, a mesmerising and fantastical transvestite cabaret which simply needs to be seen. Just as vibrant, although less frenetic, is Karon, while the areas of Kata and Phuket City offer a more family friendly and laid back atmosphere, with a touch of local flavour. Of course, the morning after can be a little stressful, and a number of Spas aim to rebalance your well being in a serene and calm environment. Failing that, a few rounds of gold on one of Phuket’s many golf courses might do the trick.

Phuket can be many different things to different people, being at once energetic, hedonistic, exciting, untamed, spiritual, secluded, relaxing and cultural. It offers you the chance to fill your days and nights with action, fun or leisure, whether through exploration, sport, culture, or simply a day at the beach.

If Your Destination Plans Are Up In The Air, Consider Beautiful Quebec

December 23, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Canada is one of the best destinations for versatility and adventure.  If you are on the lookout for a great place to take your family and get back to nature then the ‘other’ Quebec is a great option.  Many people choose to visit Montreal but never get a chance to see the rest of Quebec and all of the amazing things to do outside of the city including Quebec tours.

One great adventure, for example, is an exciting canoe trip.  You travel out to a remote setting in the wilderness for approximately 2 – 5 days on crystal clear lakes.  The wildlife is all around you from moose and barred owls to black ducks and bank swallows and you can leisurely observe all of the animals in their natural habitat.  The canoe trips can take place in Mont Tremblant Provincial Park, that is near Montreal, or possibly in the Papineau-Labelle Wildlife Reserve.  Included in these tours are refreshing swimming areas, and shaded campsites that the natives of the area used.  The guides will also provide you with games and many things to do while you roast your marshmallows over the open fire.

But perhaps you are a bit more adventuresome and require more action than a leisurely canoe trip.  That’s when the whitewater canoe trip along the Dumoine River needs to be considered.  This is in the western side of Quebec and these trips are for beginners and include instructions.  Most people consider the Dumoine the best river for whitewater canoeing.  This river of water drops more than 500 feet from it’s beginning at Lac Dumoine to 60 miles away at the Ottawa River.  Along this river are 16 sets of rapids both class I and class II and each have a name.  Yes, they do have a few class III and class IV rapids but the beginner will need to be lifted or portaged around.  In addition, there is time for hiking, taking amazing pictures and all around fun.  Nothing is better than the beauty of taking a Quebec trip along this river.

As the weather is getting a bit cooler in Quebec you will want to look at other activities such as backpacking along the Saguenay River.  The mouth of this river has had cruise ships in their waters for quite some time but the shores provide great hiking trails that even have some newly built cabins for your convenience along the way.  You have a choice of a 4-day trip that will run along the northern side of the river or a 3-day hike on the southern side.  If you are really enjoying yourself you have the option to do both.  Each of the trips are quite different from the other as one travels close to the riverbank and the other is at a high altitude that is much colder.  All of the trails have been made safe with some stairs built into the sides of the steep cliffs and they are usually dry and well maintained.  It is recommended that the best month to take this backpacking trip would be in September.  You will be required to carry your food, a light sleeping bag as well as your own personal gear.  You will have the time of your life in this beautiful area of Quebec.

The Quebec tours have something for everyone and also something for every time of year.  When the weather becomes cold and winter settles in the most fun you can have in the snow is cross-country skiing that goes from cabin to cabin.  These cross-country expeditions begin and end northeast of Montreal in Quebec at a place called Reserve faunique de Papineau Labelle.  You can bring a group of your friends or family and choose your own dates.  The peaceful trails and the beauty of the scenery is enough to bring one back time and time again.  The views when you reach the hilltops are breathtaking and cannot be matched as you look out on the rolling hills of the Laurentian valleys.  You are, as they say, one with nature, amidst the wildlife that abounds all around you.  These tours have included in the price, the transport of your gear on snowmobiles, which will allow for freedom to travel.  The cabins along the way will accommodate from 4 – 12 people on this trip and there are options for side trips as well.

As you can see, taking Quebec trips can be exciting and exhilarating.  So get away from the city for a while and enjoy what Quebec’s nature and countryside has to offer.  You won’t be sorry that you did.

Waldorf Education on Beautiful Vancouver Island

December 22, 2009 by · Leave a Comment

Subtitle: Waldorf Language Immersion in a Culturally Rich Environment

For students wishing an English language immersion experience, Island Oak Waldorf School on Vancouver Island in beautiful British Columbia, Canada, offers a unique opportunity.  Island Oak, one hour north of the historic capital city of Victoria, is located in the resplendent Cowichan Valley.   The word Cowichan, derived from the Quw’utsun First Nations word “Khowutzun,” means “warm lands” or “land warmed by the sun” in recognition of the area’s mild climate.  The valley is a peaceful, culturally rich community in which exchange and boarding students can further their Waldorf education, immersed in the English language.

Axel (last name), a boarding student, and Yakob (last name), an exchange student, are both attending Island Oak from Germany during one-half of the 2008/2009 school year.  Both students have found the experience to be valuable.  “It is a great opportunity to improve one’s skills in the English language,” says Yakob.  “Everyone helps you learn English and they don’t make a big deal around it.”  Axel adds that he found his classmates happy to help when asked.  “If they know you want them to help you, then everyone helps,” he says.  Both found the Island Oak students to be welcoming and friendly.

The two students also lauded the faculty for making learning enjoyable.  “You learn, but the lessons are fun,” says Axel.  “You can enter into the class more.”  They note that the small class sizes at Island Oak make the educational experience a more personal one, giving each student the opportunity to receive individual attention.  This intimacy provides space to work out problems and offers opportunities for the students and faculty to make decisions together.  “There is a respect for the students’ ability to make decisions about life,” says Yakob, appreciatively.

Another consideration for foreign study is the opportunity to try out a different environment to help one make a decision about where to attend university. Axel is a self-described “city man” but wanted to try a change from city life and has enjoyed seeing deer and raccoon up close.  “The nature is amazing,” he says.  The Island enjoys an abundance of wildlife, including black bears, Roosevelt elk, bald eagles and, in the surrounding oceans, killer whales (orca), sea lions, sea otters and porpoises.  Interestingly, there are no skunks, grizzly bears or poisonous snakes on Vancouver Island.

Both young men praised the trips they’ve taken with Island Oak, including ocean kayaking and a skip trip.  “It was a new experience to be able to go skiing with your school,” Yakob said.  Vancouver Island offers a wealth of opportunities for outdoor activities, including ocean kayaking, river rafting, hiking, camping, fishing, snorkeling, diving, caving, storm watching on the rugged west coast of the Island, and snow activities in the nearby mountains.

Both Axel and Yakob have found the host family experience to be well organized and would recommend that students select host families who live in or near town to make getting around easier.  They also suggested that German students come in the 10th grade given the timeframe of German exams.  Despite this advice, the two 11th graders agreed that although they will have a lot of preparation for their exams when they return to Germany, they would come again during 11th grade in a heartbeat.

Waldorf education is now it its 28th year in the Cowichan Valley, surrounded by a strong anthroposophical community, including a Camp Hill, Christian Community, anthroposopical based naturopaths and nurses, a Steiner-based biography counselor, and more.  The nearby Sunrise Waldorf School provides preschool and K-8 Waldorf education, with many Sunrise students continuing their high school education at Island Oak.

Island Oak has developed strong exchange and boarding programs.  In the exchange program, a student from Germany lives with a current Island Oak student’s family for half of a school year. During the other half, the Island Oak student attends school in Germany and lives with the exchange student’s host family. In the boarding program, the student from Germany lives with a host family from the Waldorf community. There is a charge for boarding, whereas in the exchange program, each family agrees to reciprocally provide for the living expenses of the hosted student.

Local students enjoy the regular opportunity to have foreign students enter the high school for a semester, which helps create a seamless experience for the foreign student.  As Axel and Yakob pointed out, the local students are happy to offer language assistance to the extent desired by the visiting student.  The entire community appreciates the richness brought by German and other foreign students and welcomes exchange and boarding students with open hearts and open homes.

Visit the Island Oak website at www.islandoak.org.

The games have already begun in beautiful Vancouver, Whistler
Forget skiing. I could barely stand on the steepest part of theWhistler Mountain slope that will host the men’s downhill race in the 2010 Winter Olympics. As soon as I tried edging carefully down the icy course, my skis slipped, sending me skidding. So I’ll never win a gold medal. But the skiing on that gorgeous, sunny day was still world-class.
