Ski Vail – Discovering the Best Skiing in Vail!
December 30, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
Ski Vail…the perfect skiing resort in Colorado offering different types of terrain for skiers with various skiing abilities.
Whether you are looking for beginner’s environment to don on skis for the first time, or you looking to conquer the groomed cruising terrain as an intermediate, or you want to take on the thrills of the electrifying slopes meant for advanced and seasoned skiers. Vail Ski Mountain has it all.
This beautiful and scenic mountain located in the heart of the Rockies is distinctly divided into three areas. There are four terrain parks, seven bowls and 5,289 acres of sheer skiing pleasure. Skiers have access to 33 lifts and a gondola to transport them up the slopes. In fact, Vail Ski Mountain was the first ski resort to install a gondola. The Front Side of the mountain is just right for beginners with it bunny slopes. However, those looking to ski on gentle cruisers and mogul lines can also enjoy themselves. Skiers who want to conquer the longest run can ski down the 4-mile long Riva Ridge right here.
The legendary Back Bowls is the most difficult terrain in the mountain and spreads over 3,000 acres. Most advanced skiers make sure that they are here the day it snows. If you happen to be on the Back Bowls during a storm, make sure you retreat to the Front Side or the Blue Sky Basin as there are no trees here to bare the brunt of the windstorm.
Legend has it that the Ute Indians burned acres of trees after gold prospectors drove them from their land in the 19th century. The Back Bowls is the result of that burning.
Blue Sky Basin catapulted Vail Ski Mountain to the top of the world ski resorts. The slopes here are perfect for skiers with intermediate skills. This terrain offers gladed skiing and is treasure trove of runs weaving through dense groves of trees. If you are skiing here, just remember that this part of Vail Mountain closes early as it takes some time to get back from Blue Sky Basin to the main ski mountain. The mountain receives 881 centimeters of snow annually on an average. However, the mountain has snow making facility so there is no need to worry about not having enough snow to enjoy your ski holiday.
Ski season starts sometime around mid-November and lasts right through mid-April. If you are the sort of person who likes skiing just on groomed trails then Vail Ski Mountain is perfect for you. There are snowcats that are usually used during the night to groom the trails. On occasions, the trails are groomed even during the day. Once you finish skiing, you can head to the top of Eagle’s Nest, which has a day and night family entertainment area called Adventure Ridge. Here you can enjoy some night skiing, snowboarding, sledding, tubing, and ice skating. If you have had enough, you can just sit back and enjoy a scrumptious meal. Eagle’s Nest is located on Gore Range, north of Vail Pass.

Ten of the Best Destinations for Skiing
December 29, 2009 by admin · Leave a Comment
When dreaming up an ideal winter holiday nothing can beat slipping on your skis for an exhilarating day on the slopes at one of the world’s top ski resorts. In this day and age of seasonal sports holidays there are a plethora of locations that can cater to every age and level of skier or snowboarder, and if you are looking for an authentic skiing experience it has to be on snow.
With so many state of the art resorts to choose from, picking the right destination can be tricky. If it’s an adrenaline fuelled experience you are looking for then North America is definitely the place to be. Canada is known for its dramatic scenery and impressive landscapes so it’s no wonder most of the top ski resorts can be found here. Whistler in British Columbia boasts the highest vertical drop in North America and is at the top of every avid skier’s wish list. It’s also the official venue for Alpine Skiing at the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Banff also scores high with winter travellers. It is spread over three resorts and has a generous window of snow, from mid November to May, making it ideal for late bookers. Another must in Canada is the relatively new Kicking Horse resort which is nestled in the Rocky Mountains and has breathtaking views across the range.
If hanging out with the rich and famous sounds more appealing, hop over the border to the USA and try out Vail or Aspen in Colorado. Both resorts offer a wide range of activities including snowmobiling, ice-skating and dog sledding and are regularly frequented by a gaggle of celebrities. These resorts offer the best in shopping and entertainment for anyone looking to take a relaxing day away from the piste.
If you’re after something in Europe, the snow capped mountains of the Alps can be combined with some great sightseeing around the picturesque villages of France, Switzerland, Austria and Italy. Chamonix in France is one of the most popular destinations with UK travellers. This impressive facility lies at the foot of Mont Blanc where the steep slopes and breathtaking views are sure to get the heart pumping. The town itself has a relaxed atmosphere and a multitude of après ski activities to make your evenings just as entertaining and exciting as the days. A close second in France is the nearby Courchevel which offers the best skiing in the famous three valleys region. Kitzbuhel in Austria and Zermatt in Switzerland are also amongst the most popular resorts in Europe whilst Cortina in Northern Italy is hailed as one of the most authentic.
If it’s high octane sports, glorious sightseeing or a taste of the après ski nightlife you’re after there is definitely something to be found for everyone. All resorts hire out a range of skiing equipment and onsite instructors are always at hand to teach even the most uncoordinated snow bunnies in the hope that they won’t need to make a claim on their travel insurance and so they can enjoy their skiing holiday to the full.
