The Colorado Balloon Classic was first organized in 1977. Since then it has grown into the largest hot air balloon festival in the Rocky Mountain region. The first recorded hot air balloon flight took place in Paris in 1783. Two men manned the balloon. King Louis XVI observed the event. The modern marvel of hot air balloon flight was born. The men filled the balloon, actually called the envelope, with hot air. The heated air is warmer than the surrounding air. The heated air rises to the top of the envelope.
